Dental Crowns and Bridges

Explained by Dr. Narcisi

The Center for Dental Excellence offers both dental crowns and dental bridges to patients who need dental restorations. A crown restores the structural integrity of a weakened tooth. A dental bridge replaces one or several missing teeth in a row.

Evaluating Your Candidacy  For Dental Crowns

A traditional dental crown may be right for you if you have:

Severe Tooth Damage

Porcelain crowns can strengthen teeth that have significant damage, such as severe cracks or decay. Veneers, fillings, or bonding may be better options for minor dental damage.

Remaining Tooth Structure

A traditional porcelain crown can only be placed on a tooth that has enough healthy structure remaining to support it. Teeth that are too damaged to support a crown may have to be extracted, but there are restorative options available, such as dental implants.

Good Dental Habits

While caring for a crown is not complex, proper care will help your crown last for many years. Patients should practice good oral hygiene by frequently flossing and brushing and visiting their dentist twice a year for cleanings.

Traditional Crowns vs. Implant-Supported Crowns

Dental crown

Traditional Crowns

Traditional crowns are placed over the remaining tooth structure to strengthen and protect the tooth. Our customized lab-made crowns are made of premium materials like porcelain to make strong and natural-looking restorations. While your crown is being crafted, Dr. Narcisi will fit you with a temporary crown at his Monroeville, PA, dentistry office to protect your tooth. Once your permanent crown is ready, Dr. Narcisi will switch out your temporary crown for your permanent restoration.

Dental implant

Implant-Supported Crowns

Implant-supported crowns replace the entire tooth structure and are ideal for patients who are missing a tooth or need a tooth extracted. A titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. The crown is then attached to the implant with an abutment. Implant-supported crowns provide numerous cosmetic and restorative benefits: they fill the gap in your smile with a lifelike restoration, stop nearby teeth from shifting, and help prevent jawbone atrophy.

Dr. Narcisi is equally as friendly as he is professional. He is “patient with his patients” and I am grateful to be one! My husband and I came to his office on the advice of a friend and we are truly thankful we did. My husband was in need of some work that proved to be, in our opinion the best decision we could have made for him in following Dr. Narcisi’s advice, referrals and instruction. I personally had very minor issues that I waited to have done and just finished a thank you note for this Doctor! I admire his gift and talent; the fact that he clearly takes pride in his work and can “chew the fat” all at the same time. He’s amazing!

I have seen Dr. Narcisi for probably, over 40 years. I have always been treated with kindness, by Dr. Narcisi, his receptionist, JoAnne, and all of his dental higienists. But in addition to excellent care, I believe I have always received dental care that appears to consistently being the most advanced. Additionally, it has been wonderful that the office is located in an easily accessible location in Monroeville, and the large parking lot is free. The office itself is beautiful. I highly recommend Dr. Narcisi and his staff. I have received excellent care.

Initial Consultation

Our dentist will perform a thorough oral assessment to determine your candidacy for a dental crown. This will include digital x-rays, an important step that helps Dr. Narcisi evaluate the health of the underlying jawbone.

Preparing the Tooth

Our dentist will remove any damaged or decayed tissue before gently reshaping the natural tooth to accommodate the dental crown. This allows Dr. Narcisi to fit your new crown securely over the prepared tooth and provide you with the best aesthetic results and a better bite.

Impressions

Once the tooth is prepared, our dentist will take impressions of your teeth. We can use these to create models of your mouth that will guide the fabrication of your restoration. While your new restoration is being created, Dr. Narcisi will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Fabrication

Dr. Narcisi works closely with the expert technicians at our dental laboratory to precisely color-match your new crown to the surrounding teeth in your smile. A master ceramist will apply custom hand shading to your porcelain restoration for seamless results.

Final Placement

Once your permanent crown is ready, we can schedule your final appointment to remove the temporary crown and place your final restoration. After gently removing your temporary crown, Dr. Narcisi will bond your new permanent crown to your natural tooth with dental cement. He will then check the fit of your crown and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your final restoration provides a comfortable fit and an optimized bite.

Caring for Your Dental Crowns

Whether you have just one crown or several, our dentists have put together a few simple tips to ensure you get the most out of your restorations for years to come:

Brush and Floss Daily

Dental care for crowns is as easy as caring for your natural teeth. Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush twice a day and floss at least once daily, paying special attention to the areas around your crowns. Doing so will prevent plaque buildup and keep your crowns looking their best.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods

Our all-ceramic dental crowns are built to last, but certain foods are capable of damaging them. Chewing on hard candy, ice, gum, and sticky desserts can cause your crown to chip, crack, or break.

Be Mindful of Your Habits

Try to avoid biting your nails, chewing on pens, or using your teeth as tools for opening packages. Doing so can damage both your dental crowns and your natural teeth.
